Shenoa 14 Day Money Back Guarantee

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Diamond and fine jewelry retailer Shenoa has been in business for over 25 years. Over this time they have always been sure of one thing: romance is still alive and well, despite what some skeptics might believe. Diamond engagement rings are still as popular as they ever were, and presenting an engagement ring in a proposal of marriage is a tradition that survives and thrives. One of the best things about being in the diamond and fine jewelry business is that you get to continually see how healthy romance is—even if you sell diamonds and fine jewelry online. The people at Shenoa appreciate what their products stand for, and appreciate what these products represent for the customers who buy them.

shenoa

When customers call Shenoa about possible purchases, they often ask what would be best for different romantic occasions. For example, people know that they will only have one chance to ask someone to marry them for the first time. Though love can conquer all, the right engagement ring can help tip the scales toward not having anything that needs conquering. Planning on putting an engagement ring on someone’s finger can often be nerve wracking enough, and it can certainly help to know that you’ve probably chosen just the right ring for the occasion. The people at Shenoa understand what is behind the choice of an engagement ring or engagement and wedding ring set, and they work hard to help buyers make the right choice the first time.

It isn’t just engagement rings that should take careful consideration. Birthday jewelry, anniversary rings, or simply gifts of diamond jewelry or other types of fine jewelry are purchased for many different reasons; many of them romantically based. If you have been lucky enough to have been happily married to the same person for 60 years, you have reached your diamond anniversary. Anyone who thinks that there is no romance in a marriage that has lasted that long is wrong. What is more romantic than a couple who has been devoted to each other for 60 years?

Interesting Facts About Diamonds:

Electrical conductivity

Other specialized applications also exist or are being developed, including use as semiconductors: some blue diamonds are natural semiconductors, in contrast to most other diamonds, which are excellent electrical insulators. The conductivity and blue color originate from the boron impurity. Boron substitutes for carbon atoms in the diamond lattice, donating a hole into the valence band.
Substantial conductivity is commonly observed in nominally undoped diamond grown by chemical vapor deposition. This conductivity is associated with hydrogen-related species adsorbed at the surface, and it can be removed by annealing or other surface treatments.

Toughness

Toughness relates to a material’s ability to resist breakage from forceful impact. The toughness of natural diamond has been measured as 2.0 MPa m1/2, and the critical stress intensity factor is 3.4 MN m-3/2. Those values are good compared to other gemstones, but poor compared to most engineering materials. As with any material, the macroscopic geometry of a diamond contributes to its resistance to breakage. Diamond has a cleavage plane and is therefore more fragile in some orientations than others. Diamond cutters use this attribute to cleave some stones, prior to faceting.

Color

Brown colored diamonds at the National Museum of Natural History
Gem quality diamond may be colorless or occur in any hue including the non-spectral hues of gray, brown and black. Diamond is the only gemstone composed of a single element, carbon. The diamond crystal lattice is exceptionally strong and only atoms of nitrogen, boron, hydrogen, phosphorus and maybe beryllium can be introduced into diamond during the growth at significant concentrations. Transition metals Ni and Co, which are commonly used for growth of synthetic diamond by the high-pressure high-temperature techniques, have been detected in diamond as individual atoms, however the maximum concentration is 0.01% for Ni and even much less for Co. Note however, that virtually any element can be introduced in diamond by ion implantation.

Nitrogen is by far the most common impurity found in gem diamonds. Nitrogen is responsible for the yellow and brown in diamonds. Boron is responsible for the gray blue colors. Color in diamond has two additional sources: irradiation (usually by alpha particles), that causes the color in green diamonds; and physical deformation of the diamond crystal known as plastic deformation. Plastic deformation is the cause of color in some brown and perhaps pink and red diamonds. In order of rarity, colorless diamond, by far the most common, is followed by yellow and brown, by far the most common colors, then by blue, green, black, translucent white, pink, violet, orange, purple, and the rarest, red. “Black,” or Carbonado, diamonds are not truly black, but rather contain numerous dark inclusions that give the gems their dark appearance. Colored diamonds contain impurities or structural defects that cause the coloration, while pure or nearly pure diamonds are transparent and colorless. Most diamond impurities replace a carbon atom in the crystal lattice, known as a carbon flaw. The most common impurity, nitrogen, causes a slight to intense yellow coloration depending upon the type and concentration of nitrogen present. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) classifies low saturation yellow and brown diamonds as diamonds in the normal color range, and applies a grading scale from ‘D’ (colorless) to ‘Z’ (light yellow). Diamonds of a different color, such as blue, are called fancy colored diamonds, and fall under a different grading scale.
In 2008, the Wittelsbach Diamond, a 35.56 carats (7.11 g) blue diamond once belonging to the King of Spain, fetched over US$24 million at a Christie’s auction.[20] In 2009 a 7.03 carats (1.41 g) blue diamond fetched the highest price per-carat ever paid for a diamond when it was sold at auction for 10.5 million Swiss francs (6.97 million Euro or US$9.5 million at the time) which is in excess of US$1.3 million per carat.

The Value Of Peridot Gemstone

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

The peridot is a lovely green gemstone that comes in a variety of hues and has a long and beloved history. Often pronounced per’i doh it is correctly pronounced per’i-dot and is sometimes known as the ‘evening emerald’. It is August’s birthstone and many of the emeralds of Cleopatra are believed to have actually been peridot. It is found in a wide variety of locations making it a plentiful gemstone that is more affordable than most precious stones and easy to find in many attractive settings.

the value of peridot gemstone

The Deep Value

The average peridot is a light lime green color but rare occasions find this beautiful gem in deep, rich green that rivals that of the emerald and is easily mistaken for the more expensive stone. The main difference between emeralds and peridot is the shine. Emeralds have a crystal like shine that sparkles where peridot should have a smooth, silky, velvet appearance. The most sought after color is a grass green stone with no yellow undertones.

Caution for Care

The peridot is a relatively fragile gemstone that is given a hardness value of 6.5 on a scale of 1-10. This makes it hardy enough for careful wear but should always be shielded from bumps, and rough wear. Remove all peridot jewelry before heavy work or rough play. Like many precious gems long term exposure to bright light or direct heat can cause fading. Proper storage can prevent many of the problems of fading in peridot jewelry.

Due to its softer nature peridot jewelry should be wrapped or kept separate from other jewelry when placed in a box or other storage container so that other stones do not mar its surface. Peridots should never be cleaned in ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaners often used in either commercial or home jewelry care.

The Peridot Mystique

Through the years man has believed peridot to have the ability to bring the wearer good luck, peace, and prosperity. Who doesn’t want those? It is a popular gemstone for the believed aspects of luck as much as it is for its inordinate beauty. Peridot is also thought to calm anger, sooth jagged nerves, and rid the wearer of negativity while attracting love. At one time it was thought that ingesting ground peridot would cure asthma.

Quality

Judged on clarity and color the deeper green the better with peridot jewelry. The next deciding factor in value for this gemstone is clarity. Close examination for blurry appearance, dark spots, cuts, or scratches. It is also important to check for a uniform ‘clean’ color.

Ask the seller if the gem has been treated as many peridots are coated with oils, wax, or other substances to smooth the surface and enhance or even out the color. These coatings are likely to wear over time reducing the value of the gemstone.

Typical inclusions (mars to the quality) of peridot are ribbon-like veils of milky white color like veins running through the stone, specks caused by biotite deposits, and ‘lili-pads’ that look like fried eggs, or shaped like spaceships inside the gem caused by liquid gas trapped inside. It is virtually impossible to find a peridot without any imperfection but the least amounts visible to the naked eye are more valuable stones.

Mars in a peridot appearance will be magnified greatly by its birefringence. Birefringence creates a mirroring of the cuts of the stone when looked through and will also double or magnify the appearance of cuts and scratches inside as well as other inclusions.

Any cracks, scratches, or cuts inside the gem that appear to come near the surface should be strictly avoided as they are likely to spread and cause cracks and chips on the outer surface over time.

Intrinsic Value

Peridot like any other gemstone has great sentimental and intrinsic value. While it is less rare than many precious gems a good quality stone that is properly cared for will continue to appreciate over time while providing a beautiful piece of jewelry to wear and show off.

Gemstone Prices

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Most gemstones are priced according to weight. The exceptions are some carvings and cabochons, which may be sold by the piece rather than by the carat, since the work required to produce them exceeds the cost of the material. But for the vast majority of gemstones, the price is computed on a per carat basis. One gemstone carat is 200 mg, so there are 5 carats in 1 gram. Don’t confuse carat, a measure of weight, with karat, a measure of gold purity.

gemstone prices

The price per carat of different gemstones can vary enormously, literally from $1 a carat to tens of thousands. Many factors influence the price per carat. Here is a brief summary of the factors that determine gem prices:

1. Gem Variety

Some rare gemstone varieties — such as sapphire, ruby, emerald, tsavorite garnet, tanzanite, spinel and alexandrite — command a premium price in the market. Other varieties, such as many types of quartz, are abundant in many locations around the world, and prices are much lower.

2. Color

In colored gemstones it is color that is the single most important factor in determining value. Ideal colors vary by gem variety of course, but generally the colors that are most highly regarded are intense, vivid and pure. Gems that are too light or too dark are usually less expensive than those of medium tone.

3. Clarity

A gemstone that is perfectly clean, with no visible inclusions, will be priced higher. In general, the cleaner the stone, the better it’s brilliance. However, inclusions that don’t interfere with the brilliance and sparkle of a gem will not affect its value significantly.

4. Cut and Polish

Gemstones should be cut with proper proportions to maximize the light that is returned to the eye. But gem cutters or often have to make compromises when cutting a particular stone. If the gem color is quite light, cutting a deeper stone will provide a richer color. Conversely, a dark tone can be lightened by making a shallower cut. But in every case, the facets should meet cleanly and the surface should be well polished with no scratches.

5. Size

For some gemstone varieties, such as quartz, the price per carat is fairly constant as the weight of the stone increases. But in the case of many rarer gems, price increases in a non-linear way as the weight increases. Not only are larger stones much more expensive, but gems cut in stock sizes — what are known in the trade as calibrated sizes — also tend to be more expensive. This is because more material has to be removed to achieve the calibrated size.

6. Shape

Some shapes tend to be priced higher than others, in part because of demand and in part because of material issues in cutting the specific shape. In general, round gems tend to command a premium in the market. Rounds are much less common than ovals, since ovals are usually cut to preserve as much weight of the raw material as possible. Cutting a round gem normally requires a greater loss of the rough stone, and for very expensive materials like sapphire, ruby, alexandrite and others, this can have a significant effect on price.

Differentiating Genuine and Natural Alexandrite

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Are you planning to design your own ring with Alexandrite? Or, perhaps you’re considering creating a gold and Alexandrite necklace. If this is the case, then it’s going to be important that you understand the different types of stones and what sets them apart from one another.

Alexandrite

GENUINE AND NATURAL ALEXANDRITE

Natural Alexandrite is in the chrysoberyl family of gemstones. Like other types of chrysoberyls, it contains iron and titanium. But, what differentiates it from other types of chrysoberyl is that it also contains chromium as a major impurity. The chromium is what causes those wonderful color-changing qualities. This is so important to the stone because only chrysoberyls displaying a distinct change of color can be considered true Alexandrite.

LAB-CREATED ALEXANDRITE

The best quality of lab-created Alexandrite is made by Czochralski pulling - which tends to be an expensive method used to create this stone. This method was devised to grow high quality crystals for the computer industry. It was quickly discovered that the crystal quality from this method was very desirable for creating gem-quality gemstones for jewelry. Lab-created stones are often referred to as “Lab Alex” and have a similar chemical composition and the same physical properties as the genuine thing.

Lab-created gems are some of the finest stones you can buy for the money. In most cases, the clarity in lab-created stones is far superior to natural stones. You can have a stone with all the properties of the natural stone - without the inclusions. Also, the cost of natural Alexandrite is cost-prohibitive for the average person.

These lab-created stones are considered fine gem quality . The Czochralski is the best lab-created Alexandrite technique available. However, beware of sellers who try to pass off stones created from Corundum as Czochralski stones. They will not have the same quality.

SIMULATED (OR IMITATION) ALEXANDRITE

Simulated Alexandrites are also created in the lab; however, they don’t necessarily have the same physical properties or chemical composition as natural stones. The only similarities they share with genuine and natural stone is their color and appearance. Most simulated stones are made of “lab corundum,” “lab cubic zirconia,” or glass.

Beware of sellers who call their simulated stones “lab created.” It would be more acceptable for them to refer to it as CZ, glass, simulated stones, or imitation stones. Beware of imitation Alexandrite created from glass. They are not durable, do not have the same appearance and quality as the natural ones, and should be avoided.

CONCLUSION

While we would all love to own a two carat genuine and natural Alexandrite gemstone ring, the reality is that most of us can’t shell out that kind of money. So, the next best thing is a lab-created gemstone created using the Czochralski method. You can purchase a large, eye-catching stone for the price of a typical amethyst or peridot. These gorgeous stones are priced so that everyone - no matter what their budget - can enjoy the beauty of owning an Alexandrite.

Differentiating Genuine and Natural Alexandrite From Lab-Created

Are you interested in buying an Alexandrite, but aren’t sure how to differentiate a genuine and natural Alexandrite from a lab-created or simulated one? This article will show you the differences and help you decide which type would be.

While some varieties of synthetic corundum and synthetic spinel were frequently sold as alexandrite, they really didn’t look like the real thing but were hard to differentiate since so few buyers had ever seen genuine stones. They are, however, easy for a gemologist to spot. In 1973 a very good synthetic alexandrite was produced, which is not easy to differentiate from natural stones. The Peridot Phenomenon

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Cleopatra thought they were so beautiful, she mistook them for emeralds. But, the peridot has a color all its own.

What exactly is a peridot?
Peridot is a mineral of the olivine family. It is made up of iron magnesium silicate. It is the iron that determines how light or dark the shade of green is. The shades of green range from very pale, lime to a darker olive green color. Gold and brown undertones are common. These hues look especially nice set in gold as a peridot and diamond bracelet.

There are a couple of other names that refer to these gems. Chrysolite or “golden stone” refers to a golden variety. Peridot is also called precious olivine. It is a member of the olivine mineral family.

Where Are They Mined?
Since 1500 B.C., the ancient Egyptians mined these gems from a tiny island in the middle of the Red Sea. However, the Egyptians and the Romans exhausted the supply from this mine long ago. Today, the most desirable stones come from Pakistan. In the mid-1990s, a large deposit was found high up in mountains of Kashmir. These stones are known for their excellent quality and lush color. The Kashmir peridot and diamond bracelet you’re wearing traveled a long way to your wrist.

Other mine locations are in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Brazil and Australia. There is also a mine on an Apache Indian reservation in Arizona. They have sole rights to mine the area. Though it is not a source for usable stones, the gems have even been found in meteorites that have fallen from space.

August birthstone
For those born in August, peridot ring birthstone jewelry is a common gift. This is because the lovely green stone is the official birthstone designated for the month of August.

Birthdays are not the only special occasions commemorated with a gemstone. A peridot and diamond bracelet makes a great 16th wedding anniversary present.

Proper Care for Your Gemstone
These beautiful stones rank no more than a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness which means that they are somewhat delicate. You certainly don’t want to bang your peridot and diamond ring into walls. The diamond can take it, but these gems just might crack. Also, don’t clean them in harsh chemicals or in an ultrasonic cleaner. All you have to do it soak them in soapy warm water and wipe down with a soft cloth to return them to their original vibrancy.

Healing Properties
Though once mistaken for emeralds, these gemstones are now seen as precious in their own right. Most gemstones have mystical and magical properties associated with them. These lovely green gems also have healing properties associated with them. One ancient cure for asthma is to crush up the stone and ingest it. It is supposed to increase strength and vitality. It also has a calming effect, reduces anxiety and sad feelings. The stones are also supposed to support the functions of the body when worn. So, you may have overall good health if you wear peridot rings.

Fire Opal A Cool Stone

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

All opals are made of silicon dioxide and water. The amount of water varies and determines the fragility of the individual stone. This gemstone is formed when silicon dioxide becomes wet and turns to a gel. This gel substance then works its way into the open spaces between rocks and caves. As it sets, an opal is formed.

Typically, the gemstone retains about 10% water content which makes it quite soft and delicate. They also come in a variety of colors-shades of blue, green, pink, black, white, red, yellow and orange. This stone is coveted for its play of color which is the dazzling display of color as light bounces off the spheres of silica.

Fire Opal A Cool Stone

The fire opal is one gemstone that is less desired for its play of color as it is for its actual color. As the name implies, this stone is afire with reds, yellows and oranges. Finding a fire opal pendant with hot shades as well as play of color offers the best of both worlds.

Where do they come from?

This fiery stone typically comes from Mexico. In fact, it is the country’s official gemstone. Ancient Mayans and Aztecs used the fire opal in their mosaic creations and also in special ceremonies. While most of the gemstones on the market likely came from Mexico, there are other mines located in the United States, South America and Australia among others. Most recently, significant deposits were found in Brazil and the stones were of considerable size.

Special days for a special stone

The opal is the birthstone for October. This is a great time to surprise a birthday girl with the bold hot shades of a fire opal bracelet instead of the more commonly known pastel iridescent gemstones. Just looking at it will lift her spirits and energize her. Another special day reserved for this stone is the 14th wedding anniversary. After all these years, the love is still burning strong. What better way to show this than with a smoldering hot fire opal.

Cleaning and caring for jewelry

Because of the water content, this stone is very delicate with a ranking between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Because of this, protect pieces from scratches and chips by storing them in a soft jewelry bag away from other harder pieces of jewelry.

Fire opals and other varieties should be protected from sudden and extreme temperature changes as well as arid conditions that can dry the stones out. To clean them, use a very soft cloth and gentle soap with tepid water to remove any residue. Because this gem is not durable enough for everyday wear, saving it for special events means less cleaning as well. The polished look can eventually wear away and may require re-polishing.

This hot gemstone looks spectacular in a cabochon or a faceted cut, but it should be in a setting that protects the stone as much as possible. This is particularly important for pieces like a fire opal bracelet that tend to get knocked around more often. Whether it is set in silver or gold, this stone is on fire with its lava flow of reds, oranges and yellows.

This type of dwelling is quite practical and cool as temperatures soar in the daytime. Andamooka is known for producing crystal opal and light opal. Boulder opal is produced in several areas in western Queensland.

I love seeing your Australian Boulder Opal. The richness in blues and greens is extraordinary and the darker base stone always makes the fire more spectacular, whereas in white opals, the fire isn’t ever quite as striking.

Amethysts Gem Stones

A three part series on the Amethyst Gem Stones

What is an amethyst gem stone? Amethyst is a violet or purpose variety of quartz. The name comes from the Greek and essentially means, “not drunk”.

It was believed that the stone protected it’s owner from the intoxicating effects of alcohol and Dionysius, who was the god of intoxication, was angered when he was insulted by a mortal and in a moment of pique vowed to enact revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path. He created tigers to carry out his wish and when a beautiful girl called Amethyst came among the path on her way to pay tribute to the Goddess Diana, Diana quickly changed the tigers into statutes of pure crystal quartz. Filled with remorse for his actions Dionysius wept tears which stained the quarts purple creating the amethysts we know today.

Amethysts Gem Stones

Amethysts can be found in many locations including various areas of the US such as Delaware county, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas and Yellowstone national Park for example.

Amethyst is also found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay, as well as in Zambia, Namibia and other African countries.

Amethyst from South America tend to be available in larger sizes than the African amethyst but, on the other hand, amethyst from Africa have the reputation for having a better, more saturated color in smaller sizes. Very dark amethysts, mostly in small sizes, are also mined in Australia.

As purple has always been considered a royal color it comes as no surprise that the amethyst gem stone has been so much in demand by royalty throughout history. You can see amethysts featured in the British Crown Jewels. They were also a favorite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian royalty. Amethyst, transparent purple quartz, is probably the most important quartz variety used in jewelry.

Leonardo Da Vinci once wrote that the amethyst was able to dissipate evil thoughts and quicken the intelligence.

Because amethyst was thought to encourage celibacy and symbolize piety, amethyst was very important in the ornamentation of Catholic and other churches in the Middle Ages. It was, in particular, considered to be the stone of bishops and they still often wear amethyst rings.

And in Tibet, amethyst is considered to be sacred to Buddha with rosaries often fashioned from it.

Rejuvenating 3 Stone Rings

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Over the years my mother has collected several diamond rings. She inherited some from her mom, and my father has given her several throughout their 50 years of marriage. Mom and I often plan a “girls’ day out” where we have lunch and shop or go to a movie. Before our last outing mom decided to have her wedding and engagement rings cleaned, so after lunch we stopped by her favorite jewelry shop.

She also took her other rings with her so she could ask the jeweler if they could make her something different using some of the stones from her old rings. He said he’d let her know after he inspected them. So, a nice young sales clerk showed us to a display case containing right hand rings. Mom immediately spotted some three stone rings and decided that’s what she wanted.

While the jeweler cleaned and examined my mother’s rings, she tried on several three stone rings and looked through a few catalogs to see what else was available. I looked at most of the rings with her, but when she looked through the catalogs I went on my own mission. I was in search of ideas for Christmas gifts for my family and friends.

The store was filled with glass cases of beautiful jewelry; from engagement rings to right hand rings to earrings to pins to brooches to pendant slides to nugget jewelry to religious jewelry to watches and more. I was looking for several styles of earrings, and specific pieces of teen jewelry and for a child. Jewelry needs to look nice as well as be a good value that would also fit my budget.

I always enjoy looking at birthstone jewelry, too. All the different colors of gems and stones are so beautiful! I’ve always liked aquamarines, emeralds, and all the many colors of sapphires. Since I was born in June, I have three gems to choose from: pearls, moonstone, and Alexandrite. Pearls are always nice for more elegant occasions, but I prefer Alexandrite because they are rare and unique. I’d love to have a pair of earrings someday!

My mother called me over to get my opinion on some of the settings she was interested in, but I really liked her favorite of the ones she tried on. I asked her if she’d be interested in matching earrings or maybe a necklace, as I knew my father would be thrilled to know what she wanted. She’s not the easiest person to buy gifts for, so anytime she really likes something, I take note.

When I was done gathering ideas for gifts, I made my way over to the cases of jewelry I can only dream of owning. The case was filled with rings featuring black diamonds, blue diamonds, and yellow diamonds. I had never heard of blue diamonds, but I had seen a couple of black diamonds before. One of these days perhaps I’ll own one of these beautiful three stone rings, but for now I can dream.
